This is in regard to the following excerpt from Chris Pelly’s commentary [“It’s My Party: Partisan Elections Promote Full Disclosure,” June 27]: “Our system of local governance is designed to be a representative democracy. We elect a mayor and City Council and trust in their wisdom to guide our city. I don’t always agree with their decisions, but this is the system we have.
“If, however, a majority of the voters are truly aggrieved by this decision, we do have a self-correcting process: It’s called elections.”
While Pelly’s piece was interesting and I agree with some of it, when it comes to how Council members are elected, I think the voters should make the call—not the Council members who are suspect of conflict of interest when four Democrats vote to change it to partisan.
And I don’t trust that it’s wisdom in this case; wisdom is a far step above what’s demonstrated by their decision.
