Research shows that the first five years of life lay the foundation for all future learning and that those [receiving] high quality care are far more likely to graduate from high school, commit fewer crimes, be homeowners and have higher earnings. More importantly, they will provide communities with a higher skilled workforce that will be required as technology continues to expand.
Governor Perdue's proposed state budget for the fiscal year 2010-11 makes critical investments in the area of education. I would like to recognize and thank our governor for holding the line on investments in young children. Smart Start initiatives across the state are a vital part of the education continuum and were held as equals to the K-12 and community college systems in her proposed budget. This is an important step in our state's future success. For communities to thrive, children must thrive.
Thank you, Gov. Perdue, for investing in our future and recognizing that the education process begins at birth. Now it is up to the General Assembly to hold the line on investments in young children.
