Cheers to Gov. Easley, who recently signed a proclamation declaring November as Nonprofit Awareness Month. In the midst of financial meltdowns, elections, job cuts and rising gas prices, I’m thrilled to see our nonprofit sector being recognized for its contributions to our state.
North Carolina nonprofits provide more than 212,000 jobs each year. That’s more than the construction industry, and it’s 31 percent more than the state’s entire banking, finance and insurance industries combined. Plus, the nonprofit sector pours $29 billion into the state’s economy annually. Given our current financial situation, we should all be thankful to these organizations.
So in November, cast your vote and get involved in Nonprofit Awareness Month by volunteering, writing an article for your local paper, or just saying thank you to your local nonprofits. It’s your civic duty.
