The article “Fighting Mad: Carolina Stompers Grab Headlines, Make Enemies” [Dec. 5] was an absolute riot. Actually, I’m a little surprised it wasn’t included in the Asheville Disclaimer section.
On the national level, George W. Bush’s machine of corruption has done more than its share to solidify the demise of the Republican Party in the foreseeable future. Local Republicans, already suffering greatly from Duhbya’s abysmal approval ratings, must be watching the antics of a fringe, nut-case group like the Carolina Stompers and wondering: “What can go wrong next?”
During a Republican era that has brought us the Iraq war, NSA spying, disclosing the identity of a covert CIA agent and the related felony conviction of Lewis “Scooter” Libby, evoking the threat of WW III via more lies (Iran), the shameful embarrassment of Hurricane Katrina, the Jack Abramoff scandals, Rep. Mark Foley, Sen. Larry Craig, record budget deficits and a total lack of U.S. respect on the world stage, it is absolutely mind-boggling that a group can evolve based on the need to “stomp liberals.” Maybe when Sen. [Martin] Nesbitt gets this mental-health crisis resolved, he can get [Stepson] Chad hooked up with some effective psychotropic medication.
