Since moving to North Carolina almost two years ago, I have encountered a different policy for notifying landlords/property managers of the intent to vacate at the end of a lease.
I had been accustomed to giving a 30-day notice in three other states. Here, 60 days' notice seems to be the norm. However, no prospective landlord will hold an apartment or house for rent for that long, which is understandable.
From what I have read on the North Carolina Legal Aid website, only 30 days' notice to vacate is required in the state, by either the resident or the landlord. I am on social security retirement, and it will be a hardship for me to pay both the last month's rent on the old apartment and the first month's rent on the new apartment at the same time.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I always appreciate Mountain Xpress' advocacy for Asheville citizens' concerns.
