For the past two years, I have been a Medicare recipient and have added an AARP supplement. So far, I have been very happy with the care I have received under these plans. At the same time, I think that it is important for seniors to be responsible for prioritizing the care that is most vital to their mental and physical health. To ensure that medical care for seniors remains cost-effective, adjustments in the program and how it’s paid for must be considered.
I view with suspicion Republican efforts in the House of Representatives to dismantle Medicare by imposing a voucher plan on the system. It is hard to forget that private insurance companies have a history of denying claims based on the concept of "pre-existing conditions," as well as catastrophic illnesses — draconian measures that leave individuals high and dry when they switch insurers or come down with life-threatening illnesses.
I appreciate the fact that Patsy Keever, a Democrat running for Congress in the 10th District, is a strong supporter of Medicare. Seventy percent of Americans oppose Republican efforts to deep-six Medicare, and I am among them. I am not only concerned about the well-being of my family and the 47 million Americans who now fall under Medicare; I am concerned about the well-being of all Americans, and especially those in the next generation.
