In the March 30 issue, Lindsey Miguelez stated we should change the name of the Vance memorial because he owned slaves [“Remove Vance’s Name From Downtown Monument,” Xpress]. You can’t change or erase history — that was then, this is now.
Should we change the name of the Lincoln Memorial and the many other buildings and monuments that pay tribute to the great men and women of their time?
Let’s just appreciate the past and enjoy the advancements we as a nation have made.

“You can’t change or erase history”?
Really?
Have you ever sampled the fine fair that is FOX News or right wing AM talk radio shows?
They both are doing a fine job of just that and they never hurt for funding.
Welcome to the Mountain X commenting boards- give it time and you’ll acclimate just fine from migrating from the Asheville Citizen Times Letters to the Editor section. The print version of the Mtn X has a crossword puzzle too, perfect for completing while waiting on the Denny’s Early Bird Special on Saturday morning or waiting to get the ‘high and tight’ haircut at the barber just like you may have had in 1952.
No fan of the Fox talking heads here (except Greta, she’s solid).
But seriously, how is it that I don’t ever hear people call out CNN for their very obvious lefty spin and Clinton, Sanders, establishment boot-licking? Do you people not even grasp it? Sincere question…….
Yes and no- CNN is like the Subway of news- ok once in a while if you can’t find a nice home cooked meal, and not as bad for you as say Mcdonald’s (FOX).
The false assumption lies in the fact news and information is not an either/or thing. Just because one despises FOX news does not make them a CNN/MSNBC viewer for the simple fact that there are plenty of more objective sources to get one’s news from. Some even come from (gasp) outside of ‘Merica.
I personally despise both FOX and CNN. I get my news from a wide variety of sources which means I have a better chance for putting objective news into my brainhole as checking one’s sources against each other is the hallmark of good journalistic practices.
CNN conveniently ignores a real fiscal conservative named Sanders who wants to break up the big banks after zero accountability for the Bush era’s Wall St meltdown, but one doesn’t see any coverage of that. Hillary is their one trick pony and therefore that network is not objective either.
Our either/or mentality means only 2 candidates run for pres, only 2 restaurants to choose from, Ford or Chevy etc and only hurts us as a nation. Of course we as a nation brought these limitations on ourselves when we stopped demanding news and settled for infotainment- end of sermon.
No one I know watches CNN. Sincere answer.
Alright. My next question is: what do they watch?
I know most of my Lib friends do watch CNN and CNBC. Even if they hadn’t mentioned it, I’d know. Because very often what comes out of their mouths is verbatim what those channels (and others) are pumping out. And they somehow think they’re speaking their own opinions. Scary. (Yes, I know there are Fox watchers who do the same.) I call all that: viewpoint via 6 second soundbite.
No one I know watches television. We read the Times at the club while our wives plan charitable events for the worthy poor.
You can’t change history, but you can have fun with it. I propose we simply add two letters to the name:
The Shvance Monument.

Love it! You wouldn’t even have to spend any money. Except for chalk.
