[I’m] terribly upset by the fact that a teacher needs to crowd-fund to pay for her breast cancer treatment, [as reported in the July 4 online Xpress article, “Mela Indian Restaurant Hosts July 7 Fundraiser for Asheville Teacher Laurie Joens“]. I do not know too much about North Carolina medical insurance for teachers, but I do know that teachers’ pay and pensions have been under fire for some time.
After 35 years as an administrator, I know quite a bit about what it takes to be a good teacher and the hours beyond the regular day that good teachers invest to do their job. When teachers face this type of negativism and these kinds of stories, who will enter the schools to gain a license to teach? Probably not our best and our brightest. How many teachers need to leave the system for greener pastures before the public finally says enough?
