[Regarding “Hear Ye, Hear Ye: Proposed Noise Ordinance Could Reshape Downtown’s Future,” June 23, Xpress:] I believe that we should leave it as is — that’s part of the charm of downtown Asheville. We’re losing so much of what Asheville is loved for.
As I continue to say, in 10 years, we’ll just be another town or city in North Carolina or the U.S., for that matter.

Downtown should be as noisy as possible. Especially if the noise can be directed toward windows of hotels where tourists are trying to sleep.

Let’s do something about the endless neighborhood fireworks and vehicles without mufflers. I don’t care what goes on downtown. Most people moved there knowing it was downtown, full of bars, music and drum circles.
Absolutely! Let’s protect the people who actually live here. Downtown has been turned into an amusement park by local officials and their grab for tourism dollars and should be left to run amok…

Now, there you go getting in the way of people’s sophomoric caricatures of downtown life and its residents with something factual!
If some of the other commenters actually bothered to read the document they are talking about, they might see that it addresses all of Asheville’s neighborhoods and some of the kinds of issues which seem to concern them. But why do that when it’s so much more fun to just spew nonsense about the 10,000+ downtown residents who are far more economically and demographically diverse than virtually any other comparably sized neighborhood in the city?
