Want to see immediate improvements to the ghastly state of downtown Asheville? Move the mayor’s office to the now-abandoned police substation on Haywood Street.

Editor’s note: Most of the letters about downtown Asheville in the March 15 issue came in after a recent Xpress newsletter that highlighted three articles covering concerns about public safety and cleanliness downtown. Those stories can be found at avl.mx/chu, avl.mx/chw and avl.mx/cht. To sign up for Xpress’ free newsletter, go to avl.mx/8st.

That mayor has proven time and again that she cares very little about the public safety of residents. Just shrug and dismissive and full of both-sides-of-her-mouth hubristic political platitudes. But I guess when tourism starts to take a hit, she’ll finally be forced to commission a study to determine how best to assemble a task force to find someone who will advise her how she might learn to lead–that is, if she had the humility to accept the advice. The decline of our city rests squarely on Esther, mayor of the past decade of decline.
???
Yawn
The right says she’s anti-police.
The left says she’s pro-police.
Support for the Mayor also has to be gauged against those running against her. In the last election, compared with the likes of Feingold, Hayes, Roney & Wainscott, Esther Manheimer was far and away the best of the choices. As many issues as I have with the Mayor, it is depressing to consider how poor the other candidates were, and how much worse we could do.
