The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory from 10 p.m. tonight to 10 a.m. tomorrow morning, Wednesday, Jan. 14.
“An upper level shortwave will move across the region atop an area of cold air damming tonight,” reads the NWS advisory. “This will result in rain changing over to wintry precipitation with sleet, snow and freezing rain developing north of I-40 and freezing rain to the South. Very light amounts expected.”
Madison, Haywood, Buncombe, Transylvania, Henderson, Cleveland, Rutherford mountains, greater Rutherford, Polk mountains and eastern Polk Counties are under this warning, which includes the cities of Mars Hill, Marshall, Hot Springs, Waynesville, Canton, Lake Junaluska, Asheville, Brevard, Hendersonville, Fletcher, East Flat Rock, Etowah, Shelby and Kings Mountain.
The report advises residents in the region to watch out for light ice accumulations on surfaces and roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, “which may make driving conditions hazardous.”
Temperatures across the region will vary from upper 20s to lower 30s.
Precautionary actions suggested are to “be prepared for slippery roads,” says the NWS. “Slow down and use caution while driving.”
