The Bountiful Cities Project is an urban agriculture and community gardens nonprofit dedicated to increasing food security in Asheville on urban land. Since its inception in 2000, the group’s mission has been to create beautiful community spaces that produce food in abundance while fostering a sense of social justice and sustainability.
The vision of BCP is to enliven and empower self-reliance, cooperation and a stronger sense of community through providing an opportunity to grow, harvest and eat fresh, local produce. BCP envisions community spaces that serve as models for sustainability through organic food production, water conservation, ecological building, community celebration and cooperative economics. The vision is becoming a reality at seven urban locations in Asheville. These gardens are increasing the availability of nutritious food and contributing to more physical activity and stronger communities. The school gardens also provide outdoor classrooms for area youth. This vision would not be possible without the work of dedicated volunteers.
“Urban agriculture … is smart, sustainable and local,” says BCP Executive Director Darcel Eddins. “If you care about the rising cost of food, start growing in your yard, or become involved in solutions for more edible landscapes in Asheville.”
BCP is hosting its 6th Annual Birdhouse Auction featuring bird dwellings created by area artists Saturday, May 3, at All Souls Cathedral in Biltmore Village. The preview will begin at 3 p.m. and the auction starts at 5 p.m.
