Sarge was a German Shepherd whose owner was unable to care for him any longer. The owner brought him to the Haywood County Animal Control Facility in the summer of 2005 hoping that someone would adopt him and give him a good home. Sadly, Sarge’s time ran out before he could be adopted. The people who had been working to find Sarge a home sat down and brainstormed about ways to turn the dog’s tragedy into something positive.
The result of this meeting was the creation of a nonprofit foundation whose mission is to create an adoption center where animals rescued from the Haywood County Animal Control Facility can be moved and live in a pleasant, safe environment until they are adopted. Presently, the animals are living in volunteer foster homes. Randi Pollack, Webmaster for Sarge’s Animal Rescue, says, “Right now, we consider Sarge’s to be a shelter without walls.”
