The Old Buncombe County Genealogy Society is so named because when Buncombe County was formed in 1791 it took in the area from what is now Burke and Rutherford counties all the way to the Tennessee line. The society’s library, which specializes in the western third of N.C., is located at 85 Tunnel Road in the upper level of the Innsbruck Mall, Suite 22.
Library volunteers are available to assist researchers in tracing their roots. William Trantham of Henderson County credits OBCGS for helping him “find ancestors going back to the 1700s [and for giving him an] appreciation of how they lived.”
The 6,000-plus book library includes information on families both regional and worldwide. Shelves, files and computers hold family histories, plus history and birth, marriage, death, cemetery and obituary records. Open daily, for hours call 253-1894. There is a $5 per day charge for non-members to research, and yearly membership is available with the advantages of quarterly journals, workshops, informational meetings and breaks on copy fees.
