For more than twenty years the Hendersonville-based Environmental and Conservation Organization has been dedicated to conserving and preserving the natural heritage of WNC through education, recreation, civic action and service.
ECO’s guiding purpose is to take care of our own backyard. Seeking to think globally and act locally, ECO works to preserve and protect streams and wetlands, wildlife and natural habitats, the air and trees: the environment that sustains us. As devoted stewards of the land, ECO dedicates its human resources and finances toward making a difference where we live.
Executive Director David Weintraub states, “WNC is at a crossroads. Green space in the mountains is disappearing at an alarming rate, and what will be left in a decade or two is anybody’s guess. ECO is spearheading a multifaceted effort to expand its water monitoring of area waterways, work with government leaders to increase land-protection efforts, and collaborate with other environmental efforts to establish a Green ‘Master Plan’ for the region.
