DEVELOPING STORY: APD Chief David Zack resigns; Lamb named interim chief

Asheville Police Chief David Zack submitted his resignation Dec. 15, effective immediately, according to Kim Miller, the city’s communication specialist.

At 3 p.m. Dec. 18, the city issued a press release announcing that Deputy Chief Michael Lamb will serve as interim police chief. Lamb was appointed deputy chief in June and has served in the APD for more than 25 years.

Zack had announced Dec. 12 that he planned to retire in the near future and was working with City Manager Debra Campbell and other members of the Asheville Police Department on a transition plan.

The most recent release said additional reorganization plans will be announced.

Zack was named APD chief in February 2020. He was the city’s fifth police chief in nine years.

This story was updated at 4 p.m. Dec. 18 with information about the interim chief.
