As we reported here, the archives of the late electronic-music pioneer Robert Moog were recently uncovered in a shed on his property outside of Asheville. But the poor condition of the collection — including moldy reel-to-reel tapes — has led to an effort by the Moog Foundation to raise money for restoring it.
This week, Smashing Pumpkins front man Billy Corgan, who brought his band to Asheville in June for a nine-day stand at the Orange Peel, stepped forward with an appeal to musicians and fans to give to the cause.
“I directly appeal to any musician who has been touched by the work of this great man and spirit to help contribute to the foundation, to please help preserve the work and legacy of Dr. Moog before time has taken an irreversible toll on his archives,” Corgan wrote. “I humbly also ask any fan of electronic music to consider a donation to the foundation, in recognition of his influence on many of your favorite musical artists.”
Corgan’s admiration for the man he calls an “American original” is apparent: “I believe Bob Moog to be one of the great visionaries of our time. His ideas far transcend use in just music, and to this day continue to have impact in everything from rock to rap to quantum physics.
