Juneteenth is widely recognized as a celebration of the end of slavery in the U.S. Legend has it that on June 19, 1865 General Gordon Granger read the emancipation proclamation to a large crowd of slaves in Galveston, Texas. A huge celebration followed. Likely it was the first many of them had ever heard of Washington, D.C., or just-recently deceased Abraham Lincoln.
This is the second annual celebration in Hillcrest Apartments, games, poetry, music, art, basketball and education filled the field behind the Hillcrest Community Center.
Shortly after my arrival, a young man named Rashaad Clark asked me about being a photographer. I loaned the Asheville Middle School rising 7th-grader a camera and a lens: His slide show is fantastic.
