Mark Gibney, Belk Distinguished Professor at UNCA, will present a talk on “American Immigratinon: How Did We Get Here?” at the Jewish Community Center (236 Charlotte St.), on Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. Gibney teaches courses on civil liberties, immigration/refugee law and policy, constitutional law, international law and human rights.
Co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters and the Temple Beth Ha Tephila, the focus of Gibney’s talk will be on placing the current immigration debate into a broader historical and legal context by providing an overview of the history of U.S. immigration policy and our current immigration situation — both legal and illegal.. Gibney will also discuss past attempts to reform American immigration policy and what the effects of these policies have have. The event is the first of two League informational forums on the subject. The second will be held in mid-November and focus on the economics of immigration (date and location to be announced).
The event is free and open to the public.
