Environmentalists are no longer the only ones worrying about the planet. At last weekend’s climate-change rally in downtown Asheville, State Treasurer Richard Moore said he believes that converting the corporate world is the path to real change.
To raise awareness about human-induced global warming, around 300 of the usual suspects — college students, clean-air advocates and other active members of Asheville’s eco-friendly community — turned out at the “Step It Up” rally. But one of the speakers was unusually prominent: Moore, who reportedly plans to run for governor in 2008, delivered a speech about the need to marry business interests with environmental ideals in order to effectively combat global warming.
“To get real change, you’ve got to attach dollar signs,” he said. Watch the video of Moore’s speech, shot by rally organizer Philip Gibson, here. And look for “Seeing Green,” an article in tomorrow’s Xpress, about green-business entrepreneurs sizing up Western North Carolina as the next “Sustainability Capital.”
