Since 2004, the well-reputed Nederlander organization has had the Asheville Civic Center on its list of stops for its Broadway touring productions. But get yourself down to the Civic Center tonight or tomorrow night for Stomp, or book your ticket for the March 19 production of Annie, because those are the last two shows coming to town for this series.
Nederlander has pulled its tours from both Asheville and Knoxville, according to Civic Center Events Coordinator Marcia Hart, due to low attendance. That ends four years of trying unsuccessfully to fill up enough seats to make the tours profitable at the Civic Center, which has also offered technical obstacles to the mix because of its smaller-than-standard stage with no wings and difficult load-in. Hart is looking for a way to pull in Broadway productions in the future, but says it’s unlikely to be through a series. “Possibly one or two shows,” she surmised about the prospects.
