Today, the city of Asheville began demolishing an abandoned parking garage and retail building on Haywood Street, near the U.S. Cellular Center and the Basilica of St. Lawrence. The buildings, vacant for many years and owned by the city, have been a safety concern for some time, and late last year a plan for the McKibbon Hotel Group to turn the site into a hotel complex fell through. Its future is currently uncertain.
These photos by Xpress staff reporter Carrie Eidson show the beginning stages of the demolition.
