The Montford neighborhood may get a new neighbor if Asheville City Council approves a rezoning request coming up for public hearing at its Sept. 25 meeting. The property, behind the Chamber of Commerce and bordered to the south by Interstate 240, covers about 10 acres, most of which is undeveloped and wooded.
Developers Frontier Syndicate are proposing a mixed-use development there requiring a rezoning to Urban Village, which requires dense development of residential and business locations. Only a small part of the proposed property is within Montford’s historic-overlay district, a detail developers still must work out with the Historic Resources Commission.
Also on the agenda: A jet-fuel provider at Asheville Regional Airport may get some competition. Council will continue to consider a lease application by Encore FBO Acquisitions to the Asheville Regional Airport Authority. The company provides aircraft maintenance, including refueling — currently a role held exclusively by the company Million Air.
But complaints by Million Air that the new lease is unfair to their business, and the fact that the 30-year lease extends beyond the city’s current lease agreement with the authority, which expires in 2017, led Council to continue the discussion from its Aug. 28 meeting.
