Early voting began yesterday with its highest turnout yet, as 6,512 people showed up to cast their ballots at 18 locations around Buncombe County.
That’s a jump from the roughly 5,000 that showed up on the first day of early voting in 2008, Buncombe County Election Services Director Trena Parker tells Xpress.
“It looks like people were sitting at home, ready to go,” Parker says of the turnout. “We’ve been very busy.”
A common misconception, Parker says, is that early voters have to vote at a specific location; they can vote at any of the spots through Nov. 3. Even voters who missed the registration deadline can cast a ballot if they have proof of county residence.
Yesterday 3,522 Democrats, 1,520 Republicans, 1,462 Unaffiliated voters and eight Libertarians turned up to the polls.
The Buncombe County Board of Elections has a complete list of early voting locations. Voters may also look up locations here.
