Buncombe County commissioners wrapped up their Sept. 7 meeting in less than an hour. Among the actions they took and reports they heard was this tidbit: Commuters are the county’s second-largest source of carbon emissions, making up 18 percent of the total. More than 90 percent of county employs drive to work, averaging a roundtrip of almost 28 miles. In other actions and reports, according to Xpress reporter Jake Frankel, commissioners:
Scheduled an Oct. 8 public hearing to consider a revision to steep-slopes policies
Heard staff reports on county government’s carbon footprint and proposals for reducing it; some possible improvements include such actions as upgrading HVAC systems and replacing windows at the Health Center
Passed a proclamation honoring the Blue Ridge Parkway’s 75th anniversary
Declared this “Minority Enterprise Development Week”
Honored the county’s Human Services Department for winning a productivity award
Were invited to an upcoming neighborhood meeting about the EPA’s recent announcement that it may propose making the CTS property a Superfund site.
