As the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners enters the final month of 2009, its agenda for Tuesday’s meeting appears simple: give zoning final approval; appoint vice chair; appoint some board members; go home.
While the commissioners voted 4-1 to reinstate countywide zoning in late November, state law requires a second reading of the new ordinance. During the last meeting, county residents spoke on zoning, with many opposing the measure and tensions running high. However, this reading will not involve a public hearing, though anti-zoning activists may again criticize the board’s decision during the open public comment time at the end of the meeting.
The board will also appoint a vice chair for the coming year. The vice chair presides over meetings when Chair David Gantt cannot be present. The post is currently held by long-time commissioner Bill Stanley.
The commissioners will also appoint members to the Downtown Commission and the Metropolitan Sewer District.
The board will meet at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, in the commissioner’s chambers, located at 30 Valley St. A short pre-meeting review of the agenda will begin at 4:15 p.m.
