Asheville’s growing climate-services community will be on display in New Orleans on Jan. 20-24 when the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County exhibits at the American Meteorological Society’s AMS annual meeting in New Orleans, the world’s largest trade show for weather and climate-related businesses. The Asheville exhibit will be staffed by the EDC, Education Research Services, ERC Broadband and the AMS Asheville Chapter.
The AMS Asheville Chapter was named AMS’s Chapter of the Year in 2007 for the dramatic increase in its membership, its effort to bring the most recent research and developments in atmospheric science to members, and its extensive outreach to the Asheville community.
AMS’s 2008 annual meeting is organized around the theme of “Enhancing the Connectivity Between Research and Applications for the Benefit of Society.” It will feature a special forum titled “Hurricane Katrina: Looking Back to Look Ahead.”
“The Asheville-based Centers for Environmental and Climatic Interaction are an emerging national resource for climate-change decision-making tools, and we want to bring attention to what Asheville has to offer as virtually all sectors of the U.S. economy determine their response to climate change,” said Ray Denny, the EDC’s executive director.
The Asheville exhibit is a collaborative effort by the EDC, the Asheville Hub’s Technology Cluster, CECI and ERS, and will present information about Asheville’s growing climate-services community. The exhibit will feature Climate Alive!, a seven-minute feature about Asheville’s role in helping government, business and individuals understand climate change (see the film at www.climatealive.org).
