At its meeting tonight, Feb. 28, Asheville City Council will consider changes to signage rules, as well as a rezoning necessary for the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce to sell space to a Lenoir-Rhyne University satellite campus.
As development in Asheville has increased, signs have remained an issue. The staff report preceding the newly proposed rules notes that “concern over sign standards goes back as far as we can recall and consistently gets raised periodically, year after year. And the pendulum seems to swing from year to year from concern that there is inadequate enforcement to concern that the standards are overly restrictive.”
The new rules clarify the city’s standards on signs in right-of-ways, political campaign signs, and electronic signage, among other issues.
Council will also vote on a rezoning that would allow the Chamber to sell the third floor of its current Montford Avenue building for a graduate student satellite campus for Lenoir-Rhyne University. The campus would offer evening classes to about 200 students. The Chamber’s building is currently under-capacity.
Asheville City Council meets at 5 p.m., Feb. 28 on the second floor of City Hall.
