“I think we should celebrate that this Council is moving our meetings along a whole lot better.” So said Asheville Mayor Terry Bellamy near the conclusion of City Council’s last formal session, which wrapped in an admittedly impressive two hours. But Council may have a hard time keeping that streak with what’s on its docket for Oct. 28: An extensive agenda punctuated by some high-profile items will most likely make for a full evening.
Apart from the 15-point consent agenda, Council will also hear updates on the 10-Year-Plan to End Homelessness (now three years old) and the city’s Capital Improvement Plan.
Also look for a report on adopting a living wage policy that applies to outside contractors — a policy that would seemingly go against the standing practice of awarding contracts to the lowest bidder.
Council will also hear a progress report on the delayed Downtown Master Plan draft and hear from URTV, which has the mixed blessing of having a community demand that exceeds its current funding.
And Council will consider a partnership with Public Interest Projects to build a parking garage beneath the incoming Aloft development.
