At its Feb. 12 meeting, Asheville City Council will hear an argument for citizen involvement in local election reform. The proposal, to be introduced by Council member Brownie Newman, imagines a Citizen’s Commission on Local Elections. That body would consider election issues like finance reform, districting, instant-runoff voting and filling seats left vacant when current Council members are elected to other offices.
Council will also hold several public hearings, including one on a possible change to the Unified Development Ordinance restricting the ability of large retailers to expand their floor plans by including another tenet in the building.
And there will be a discussion of Council’s priorities for federal funding in the 2008/2009 fiscal year.
