Asheville City Council will hold a special closed session 9 a.m. Thursday about an undisclosed personnel matter, likely allegations about Asheville Police Department Chief William Anderson.
The announcement of the meeting notes that Council may take action. Specifically, the announcement cites a state law that allows the following:
The city manager, with concurrence of the council, or, in cities not having a manager, the council may inform any person of the employment or nonemployment, promotion, demotion, suspension or other disciplinary action, reinstatement, transfer, or termination of a city employee and the reasons for that personnel action. Before releasing the information, the manager or council shall determine in writing that the release is essential to maintaining public confidence in the administration of city services or to maintaining the level and quality of city services.
On June 25, APD Lt. William Wilke claimed he was “forced to change the facts,” about a March 9 car crash involving Anderson’s son. The next day, City Manager Gary Jackson promised a full administrative investigation of the matter, though District Attorney Ron Moore said he was satisfied with an earlier State Bureau of Investigation inquiry into the incident, and has no plans to proceed further.
