Animal advocates protest local circus performances

A handful of protesters advocated against what they say is animal abuse outside the US Cellular Center downtown Thursday afternoon, asking passersby not to support the upcoming performances by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. The performances begin tonight and will continue throughout the weekend.

According to spokeswoman Bri Pollard, the group, Asheville Voice for Animals, plans to protest continually until the circus leaves town. Pollard said the group is independent but received its handouts and signs from the nationally-organized People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Oh, gosh. My mother-in-law is taking my 3-year-old son to this on Saturday. Please don’t yell at them on their way in.

The point of the protest is to educate people about the brutality animals endure at the hands of “The Greatest Show” on earth. Every dollar spent goes to the continued abuse of all circus animals. By refusing to attend, people can teach their children that supporting abuse is not acceptable.
