The intersection of Cherokee Road and Sunset Drive in north Asheville is once again open to cars after it was closed for six months due to the reconstruction of a retaining wall.
Located in the historic Albemarle Park neighborhood, the project aimed to restore the wall to its original look, making use of existing stones on its facade. It also encompassed utility relocations, storm-drainage improvements and paving.
Analyses of the wall performed in 2009 and 2012 resulted in recommendations that the structure be replaced, according to the city of Asheville’s website. Located along the steep slopes of Town Mountain, the area remains vulnerable to landslides. The Historic Resources Commission as well as Asheville City Council approved the project in January.
