If you have a friend or family member who’s been diagnosed with a mental illness, you may want to check out a free upcoming course.
The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill’s Family-to-Family Education Program — a 12-week course — will be offered in Asheville from 7-9:30 p.m. on Thursdays beginning Sept. 5.
The curriculum focuses on schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), clinical depression and the anxiety disorders. The course discusses the clinical treatment of these brain disorders and gives family members the knowledge and skills they need to cope more effectively. All course materials are provided free to class participants.
More than 100 such courses have been offered in North Carolina and in hundreds of communities across the country under the auspices of NAMI and its local affiliates.
