Soiree in the City
A new fundraiser for The Health Adventure comes replete with a spectacular view of downtown Asheville (and replaces the health and science museum’s traditional ‘Cork & Flame’ spring benefit).
Held at the Biltmore Office Building’s rooftop patio, ‘Soiree in the City’ takes place from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 18. The event will offer participants the chance to enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while swaying to the sultry sounds of the Wadopian Jazz Trio and taking in the Asheville skyline. The event is limited to 100 ticket holders at $50 a pop. Summer cocktail attire is requested.
“We are very excited to offer this event to benefit The Health Adventure’s educational programs and exhibits,” says President/CEO Todd Boyette. “This evening will provide a chance for guests to experience Asheville’s beauty in a new way at a reasonable ticket price while supporting one of the city’s vital resources.”
The Health Adventure, founded in 1968, is dedicated to improving health awareness, promoting wellness lifestyles and increasing science literacy through programs and exhibits.

Purse power
When Susan B. Anthony said, a “Woman must have a purse of her own,” she meant, of course, financial independence.
As a playful salute to that notable quote — and to celebrate the power of women’s philanthropy in Western North Carolina — the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina will hold a Power of the Purse Luncheon from 11:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, at the new Lioncrest facility on the Biltmore Estate.
The event will feature a luncheon, a keynote speaker and 30 purses created by regional women artists that will be auctioned off to benefit The Women’s Fund, a permanent endowment that supports the unmet needs of women and girls in the region.
The keynote speaker will be Abigail E. Disney, founder and president of the Daphne Foundation, a progressive, social-change foundation that makes grants to grassroots, community-based organizations working with low-income communities in New York City. She has also provided support to the nonpartisan White House Project and the Ms. Foundation for Women, and is the chairwoman of the New York Women’s Foundation. She’s also the grandniece of Walt Disney.
