An extensive joint study by the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force highlights the hazards transgender people face. Among the findings of the 2011 study were:
• 40 percent of respondents reported harassment when their identification didn't match their preferred name.
• 63 percent reported facing serious discrimination at school, in the workplace or in public, including assault and bullying by teachers.
• Respondents were almost four times more likely to live in extreme poverty (earning less than $10,000 a year) than the general population.
• Only 21 percent said they’d been able to update all their legal documents to reflect their preferred name.
