Based in Henderson and Transylvania counties, Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy is a nonprofit organization dedicated to “saving the places you love.” CMLC helps landowners protect land and water resources vital to our natural heritage and quality of life. Since 1994, CMLC has been creating a regional network of more than 16,500 acres of protected farm, forest, park and natural lands.
CMLC’s primary land-protection tool is the conservation easement (or conservation agreement). Easements permanently restrict some uses of land, including industrial, commercial and residential development. Working with the landowner, CMLC identifies specific uses allowable within easement, often incorporating agriculture, forestry, recreation or open space.
CMLC has a strong membership and volunteer base. Outreach Coordinator Suzanne Hohn explains, “Volunteers play a vital role in our organization: From our dedicated board members to event planners, to completing office work, to leading hikes and maintaining trails, we couldn’t get it done without them!
