With Asheville’s Downtown Master Plan now under development, the city wants additional public input. Accordingly, the Asheville Downtown Commission and City Council will host another series of meetings over two days—Monday, July 28, and Tuesday, July 29—to hear residents’ concerns.
The meetings will be held at the Asheville Public Works Building (161 S. Charlotte St.), except for the final general meeting, which will take place in the Asheville Civic Center.
The feedback will help project consultants develop a draft plan, which is slated for release this fall. Here’s the meeting schedule:
Monday, July 28
• 1 to 3 p.m.
Strategy Workshop 1: Experiencing Downtown Asheville
Strategies for improving people’s experience downtown—how to preserve and enhance its historic and cultural resources while facilitating circulation and making parking more convenient.
• 6 to 8:30 p.m.
Community Open House
A discussion of the needs of downtown’s African-American community.
Tuesday, July 29
• 8 to 10 a.m.
Downtown Business Owners Meeting
A session focusing on the needs of the city’s business community.
• 10 a.m. to noon
Strategy Workshop 2: Shaping Downtown Asheville
Strategies for downtown’s future development—an urban-design framework, new ideas for the development-review process, an updated design-review procedure, sustainable building standards and more.
• 1 to 3 p.m.
Strategy Workshop 3: Enriching Downtown Asheville
Strategies for “a sustainable and resilient downtown economy,” including redevelopment possibilities and a management structure for downtown.
• 6 to 9 p.m. (Asheville Civic Center)
General Meeting: Strategies for a Vibrant Downtown Asheville
A review of the strategies suggested by the planning team, as well as comments and ideas generated during the meetings.
