AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax counseling and preparation service available free of charge to seniors and other low- and middle-income taxpayers.
In 2007, 30 volunteers, who were trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue, helped more than 1,500 taxpayers file their federal and state returns at four sites in Buncombe County.
All tax returns are prepared on computers and are electronically filed with the IRS and the N.C. Department of Revenue for safe and accurate filing and faster refunds. All volunteers are specially trained to take advantage of all credits now available to taxpayers, including the child tax credit, dependent care credit, education credit, retirement savings contribution credit, residential energy credit and the earned income credit. The earned income credit alone can provide a refund of up to $4,716 for a family with low income.
Jurgen Dierks, a local coordinator for AARP Tax-Aide, states, “We have great satisfaction when we can obtain the maximum refund for a taxpayer, and because all our returns are filed electronically, refunds are received in about 10 days.”
