The Laurel Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America holds a monthly meeting and smaller groups dedicated to teaching different types of needlework. The chapter is also involved in numerous outreach projects, including Habitat for Humanity, Project Linus, IAM and Johnson Farm’s Heritage Day.
Member Janet Stewart states, “The mission of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America is to stimulate appreciation for and celebrate the heritage of embroidery.” While member Cathie Barker says, “When I found The Laurel Chapter, EGA, I found my home, my kindred spirits.”
In February, the Laurel Chapter is participating in National Embroidery Month with a series of special events to celebrate the needle arts. A colorful display of the chapter’s creations will be on display at the Hendersonville Library for the remainder of February. There will be examples of hardanger, needlepoint, beadwork, blackwork, cross stitch, crewelwork and needlepunch.
On Saturday, Feb. 7, the Embroiderers’ Guild of America will sponsor stitch-ins, held by chapters across the nation. The Laurel Chapter will hold its stitch-ins at the Hendersonville, Brevard and Arden libraries, and at the Hendersonville Visitor’s Center. Chapter members will demonstrate various needle-art techniques, answer questions about the organization and pass out literature.
A larger display of the chapter’s art will be available for viewing Friday, Feb. 20, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Hendersonville Library’s Kaplan Auditorium.
