If you turned on your TV for some holiday festivities yesterday, you may have seen a familiar sight — all the way from New York City! Western Carolina University’s Pride of the Mountains Marching Band led the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in front of an estimated 3.5 million spectators and another 50 million at-home viewers. The 505-member band performed Billy Joel’s “I’ve Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway.”

Western Carolina students, teachers and alumni, as well as other Western North Carolina residents, shared their support for the band on social media. Matt Lauer, host of NBC’s broadcast of the parade, also received some shout-outs for his correct pronunciation of “Cullowhee.”
