Hall Fletcher Elementary will hold the second year of its “Star Chef Junior Chef Cooking Competition” throughout February. The program is part of the school’s year-round science program that includes organic gardening skills, environmental science, nutrition and stewardship.
The program was designed to complement fourth grade essential standards for science, which include nutrition and how vitamins and minerals should be incorporated into a balanced diet, says garden specialist Rachel Lubitz.
“The winter months only lend to so many garden related activities, so I wanted something self-directed and interactive that students could take ownership of in learning about healthy cooking,” says Lubitz.
The cooking competition is facilitated by Hall Fletcher faculty and volunteers who serve as mentors and guest judges.
