Run with a cause: The A.C. Reynolds Global Awareness Club will hold its annual 5K run/walk and three-person relay beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 24, at A.C. Reynolds High School, 1 Rocket Drive in Asheville. Proceeds from the event will help fund an apprenticeship center affiliated with a school in the West African country of Benin.
The entry fee is $12 for students and $15 for adults. Registration forms are available at the Global Awareness Club’s Web site (www.globalawarenessclub.org). Race time is 9 a.m.; same-day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
Start them young: The North Carolina State Council of Trout Unlimited is sponsoring the sixth annual Rivercourse Coldwater Conservation and Fly Fishing Youth Camp this June at Lake Logan Center, near Canton.
Focusing on the wilds of the west fork of the Pigeon River, the program is designed to get young people in touch with the ethics of coldwater conservation. Participants ages 13 through 15 will receive instruction from volunteer experts in geology, entomology, herpetology, stream-restoration techniques, wetlands ecology and environmental policy. They’ll also get a heap of experience with fly-fishing and fly-tying, and help plant a riparian buffer with native plants.

Bass-ackwards: The Pigeon Valley Bassmasters Club of Canton usually meets the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. at the Canton Library. However, the May club meeting will be moved forward to Wednesday, May 7. Interested anglers are encouraged to attend.
