On April 7 at 7 p.m., Danny Bernstein – a regular Mountain Xpress contributor and hike leader – will launch her new book, Hiking North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Heritage – at Diamond Brand Outdoors (2623 Hendersonville Road, Arden). She’ll present a slide show, Earth Fare will provide good food, and – for every book sold that evening – Diamond Brand Outdoors will donate 50 percent of the proceeds to Smokies Trails Forever, an endowment initiative for funding the maintenance and improvement of trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
For anyone who registers to become a member of Friends of the Smokies at the book launch, Diamond Brand will also offer a $20 gift card. But there’s more: You’ll also be able to buy the new Dolly Parton CD, written and produced especially for the Smokies 75th anniversary (Tennessee native Dolly Parton is the official ambassador for the Park’s 75th Anniversary celebration. This year, she’s donating all proceeds from her new CD Sha-Kon-O-Hey to Friends of the Smokies).
Back to Bernstein’s book: In Hiking North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Heritage, Bernstein offers 66 day hikes, ranging from 1.3 to 13.1 miles. She includes everything you need to know about the trail – maps, elevation chains, trail highlights, fees. What Bernstein adds is the history and lore about many of the hikes – from books and movies, to Revolutionary and Civil War tales, to family stories.
