I learned several things today while snapping photos at Eliada’s annual corn maze. One: it’s challenging to take photos/video of folks running through a corn maze, because with 2.7 miles of trail, I couldn’t find any of the other folks. I could hear them laughing and chattering, but they were just always around the bend — or some bend, somewhere. Turn the wrong corner? Lost ’em.
Side note: It’s also challenging holding a camera still while dodging corn stalks and tripping over dirt. I am not a graceful person. Sorry for the shaky footage.
Two: Corn cannons. Those things are packing lots of power. After standing next to the cannons for a good half hour, adjusting my shutter speed like a maniac while desperately trying to catch the magic of an ear of corn shooting out of the top, it just wasn’t happening. A good 300 photos went by and the best I could get was a stream of air. But I tried, guys! That’s all that matters, right?
Three: If you try to take photos of children playing in the corn-kernel sandbox, you’re going to get a face full — or an ear full (ha!) — of corn. I had a whole cob full of kernels in my socks by the time I got home.
But getting lost in the maze, drinking apple cider and attempting to shoot giant pumpkin-men was all good fun — not to mention it supports a great cause.
The maze runs Thursday to Sunday, through Oct. 26. Tickets are $9 for ages 12 and up, $6 for children 4-11 and free for children younger than 3.
