Old apples, new tricks: Tom Brown, heritage-apple enthusiast, collector and propagator, will talk about the virtues of Heirloom Apples, the importance of preserving them and his adventures scouting them out. He’ll also discuss and demonstrate grafting and more. Tiny timber: The North Carolina Arboretum will host its 11th Annual Carolina Bonsai Expo on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. The expo will present “exquisite examples of bonsai” from Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the Carolinas. In addition, the Arboretum will be celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of the $1.8 million Bonsai Exhibition Garden, which has garnered national attention. Trouble in mind: The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Master Gardener volunteers will hold the last plant-problem clinic of the season on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the WNC Farmers Market on Brevard Road. Stop by their table in the breezeway between the retail buildings to ask gardening questions or bring a plant or insect sample for diagnosis.
