Sleuths in the garden: The Botanical Gardens at Asheville will start its kids’ series, Garden Science Investigation (GSI), on Saturday, May 17, with a program called “A Habitat’s a Home.” The series, intended for ages 5 to 11, aims to encourage children’s observation and investigative skills in the natural world. Cost is $7 per child per activity. Each session is limited to 12 participants.
All programs take place at the Botanical Gardens, 151 W.T. Weaver Blvd. (next to UNCA) from 10 a.m. to noon. For more information or to register call 252-5190.
Don’t panicle, dude: The Blue Ridge Hydrangea Society will hold its annual plant sale on Saturday, May 17, at the North Carolina Arboretum.
Few plants give as much, and ask for as little in return, as the mighty hydrangea, with varieties ranging from the bossy and exotic to native selections with their own store of merits.

This is how they do it: The Carolina Farm Stewardship Association will hold its Upstate Farm Tour on May 31 and June 1, featuring 17 farms in the South Carolina foothills. The tour, which runs from 1 to 6 p.m. both days, is a good opportunity to see how our neighbors to the south are working the land.
