All systems ‘go’: Work has begun on a new skate park at Black Mountain’s Carver Center, with a grand opening scheduled for Jan. 11. Kudos to the committed folks out there for making it all happen. Look for more coverage in Xpress this winter.
Arch enemies: Are your running shoes leading you down the path to perdition? Pay a visit to Foot Rx on Hendersonville Road on Jan. 7 and 12 – on both days, Scott Socha will hold a clinic for beginning runners about the value of orthotics. The half-hour talks begin at 9:30 and 10 a.m. both days.
I was a teenage slalomer: Asheville Parks and Recreation is hosting a series of Friday night excursions for teens to Cataloochee Ski Area in the months of January and February. Lift tickets and a lesson for the five-week session is $215; lift tickets, a lesson and ski rental is $240; and for the snow-surfers among you, lift tickets, lesson and snowboard rental is $250. Transportation via charter bus is included. The ski trips depart Stephens-Lee Recreation Center at 4:15 p.m. and return at 11:00 p.m.
If your teen is of a more reflective turn, they can choose to only ride the bus for $17 per trip or $75 for the entire session. For those who live outside the city, prices are slightly higher.
