Give a hoot: Fierce performances from sophomore Patrick Hurley and junior Kylie Krauss boosted Warren Wilson College’s mountain-biking team to finish second in Division II at the 2006 USA Cycling Collegiate Mountain Bike National Championships, held Oct. 20 to 22 at Angel Fire Resort in New Mexico.
The fighting Owls placed second behind Western State College in the
competition, marking the fourth time a WWC team has placed runner-up in the championships.
Hurley, a sophomore from Arnold, Md., finished third in the men’s overall individual standings, and Krauss, a junior from Bay Village, Ohio, took fifth for the second consecutive year in the women’s overall standings. The team standing combined points from four events: short-track cross-country, four-cross, cross-country and downhill.
Livin’ lightly and lovin’ it: With the U.S. population having recently surpassed the 300 million mark, our natural places are more beleaguered than at any time since brontosauruses roamed the earth. In other words, packing your poo and potato-chip bags out of the backcountry has never been more important. Granted, we’re not giving you much lead-time, but tonight, Nov. 1, Diamond Brand Outdoors in Arden will host “traveling trainers” from Subaru presenting a “Leave No Trace” awareness seminar. The whole idea is to infuse peoples’ outdoor experience with a little more responsibility toward Ma Nature. The event starts at 7 p.m., and low-impact refreshments will be served.
