Bringing the gold back to Swannanoa: The Warren Wilson College mountain-bike team dominated Division II of the Southeastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Championships in Clemson, S.C., on Oct. 13 and 14.
Senior Kylie Krauss and junior Patrick Hurley pedaled to women’s and men’s overall individual titles, respectively, during four events: short track, cross country, dual slalom and downhill. And WWC senior Ashlee Robison, a former national champion, won titles in the women’s dual slalom and downhill, finishing ahead of all female racers from divisions I and II.
The team travels next to the mountain-bike nationals at Lees-McCrae College in Banner Elk, scheduled for Oct. 26 to 28.
It’s a jungle out there: Next month, Diamond Brand Outdoors will host a free program on Wilderness Emergency Medical Aid (WEMA) for kids and their parents, taught by local author, teacher and wilderness enthusiast Steve Longnecker.
The clinic begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at the store’s Arden location, and promises to cover the nitty-gritty of what can go bad in the great outdoors.
“While this program is directed to children, it is rather graphic,” says Longenecker, a certified wilderness EMT and longtime educator. “It is intended to prepare kids to handle a real emergency, so parents should be aware of the content.”
Each child attending will receive an autographed copy of Longenecker’s book, WEMA for Kids, along with a wallet card outlining program topics.
